We have exciting news! We’ve just finished the outline for a brand new business book we’re working on to enable eco-conscious business leaders to make a HUGE difference to the ocean plastic crisis. The working title is:
Plastic Game Changer: How to shrink your organisation’s plastic footprint, positively impacting ocean plastic & your bottom line.
The book will appeal to Business Leaders and Sustainability Professionals, running organisations of all shapes and sizes, who want to play a significant part in tackling the ocean plastic crisis – giving them the power to be Plastic Game Changers by showing them how to rapidly and efficiently shrink their organisation’s plastic footprint.
Why are we focusing on businesses and organisations?
Whilst individuals can make a difference to ocean plastic by making positive changes that add up over time; and governments can legislate to curb the biggest sources of plastic pollution – it will take considerable time to reach a tipping point via either of these routes.
And time is not something we have in abundance of when it comes to plastic pollution.
Despite the fact that there is no ‘away’ when it comes to this indestructible material, the amount of plastic currently produced every year globally weighs roughly the same as the entire weight of humanity!
Yet, it is projected that if we continue with our current business-as-usual practices we’ll see plastic production double over the next 20 years.
Meanwhile, it’s estimated that between 5m and 13m tonnes of plastic leaks into the world’s oceans every year – which equates to a truckload of rubbish a minute!
Once in our natural environment and oceans, plastic causes widespread harm and suffering to birds and animals as it entangles, chokes, poisons and starves – and of particular concern to humans – as it is ingested by fish that ultimately end up on our plates.
With an urgent need to stem the flow of plastic waste, the best thing we can do is reduce demand for plastic production in the first place.
Businesses, schools and organisations of all sizes are in the privileged position of being able to relatively swiftly make sweeping changes to reduce their plastic use – creating far-reaching impact and a ripple effect of positive change among suppliers, colleagues, customers, industry, competitors and their wider communities.
#PlasticGameChanger is all about being resourceful – reinventing how we do business to create a future that doesn’t involve trashing the planet.
The book is an urgent call-to-action to bring many more organisations on-board with plastic reduction strategies.
It will also feature inspirational stories from other Plastic Game Changers – businesses that are leading the way, changing the rules and shifting perceptions so that disposable, excessive and inappropriate plastic use will very soon be a thing of the past.
The need for leaders to step up the challenge has never been more urgent.
